Zacharias

Zacharias is the Greek and Latin form of the Hebrew name Zechariah, derived from the elements zakar, meaning to remember, and yah, a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh, giving the combined sense of God has remembered. The name appears throughout the Hebrew Bible and is borne in the New Testament by the father of John the Baptist, a figure whose story is told in the Gospel of Luke. Its widespread use across early Christian communities helped carry the name into Latin ecclesiastical tradition and later into many European languages.
