Zacharias

Zacharias is the Greek and Latin form of the Hebrew name Zechariah, derived from the elements zakhar, meaning to remember, and yah, a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh, giving the overall sense of God has remembered. The name appears in the New Testament as that of the father of John the Baptist, a Jewish priest who received a vision foretelling his son's birth, which helped establish the name throughout Christian Europe. It was also borne by numerous figures in the Hebrew Bible and by an eighth-century pope. Related forms include Zechariah, Zachary, Zaccharias, and the Czech and Slovak variant Zachariáš.
