Zara has multiple proposed origins, the most widely accepted tracing it to the Arabic root zahr, meaning flower or blossom, which also connects it to the Hebrew name Zarah or Zerah, meaning dawn or brightness. The name gained literary prominence through William Congreve's 1697 tragedy The Mourning Bride, where Zara is a captive queen, and later appeared in works by other English writers, helping establish it as a given name in the English-speaking world.
