Zechariah

Zechariah is a Hebrew name derived from the elements zakar, meaning "to remember," and yah, a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh, giving the overall sense of "God has remembered." It is borne by numerous figures in the Hebrew Bible, most prominently the prophet whose visions are recorded in the Book of Zechariah, as well as the father of John the Baptist in the New Testament. The name has remained in use among Jewish and Christian communities throughout history owing to its strong scriptural associations. Closely related forms include Zacharias, the Greek and Latin rendering, and Zachary, the common short form widely used in English-speaking countries.
