Adelbert is a Germanic given name composed of the elements adal, meaning noble, and beraht, meaning bright or famous, yielding the overall sense of nobly bright or illustriously noble. It was borne by several medieval saints and churchmen, most notably Saint Adalbert of Prague, the tenth-century bishop and martyr who became the patron saint of Bohemia and Poland. The name is a variant of the more common Adalbert and is closely related to Albert, which arose from a contracted form of the same roots.
