Elbert is a Dutch and Low German form of the Old High German name Adalbert, composed of the elements adal, meaning noble, and beraht, meaning bright or famous. The name was common in medieval Germanic-speaking regions and traveled to English-speaking countries largely through Dutch and German immigrant communities, particularly in the United States.
