Adeline is a French diminutive form of Adele, itself derived from the Germanic element adal, meaning noble. The name was carried into medieval England by Norman French influence following the Conquest of 1066, and it was borne by Adeline of Louvain, queen consort of England as the second wife of Henry I. The name enjoyed a revival in the nineteenth century across both France and the English-speaking world. Closely related forms include Adelaide, Adaline, Adela, and Ada.
