Clara is a feminine given name derived from the Latin adjective clarus, meaning bright, clear, or famous. It was borne notably by Saint Clare of Assisi, the thirteenth-century founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, whose name was Latinized as Clara and helped spread the name throughout medieval Europe.
