masculine · Irish origin
Connor is an Anglicized form of the Irish name Conchobar, composed of the Old Irish elements con, meaning dog or hound, and cobar, meaning desiring, giving an overall sense of lover of hounds or wolf-lover. The name was extremely common in early medieval Ireland and was borne by many legendary and historical figures, most notably Conchobar mac Nessa, the mythological king of Ulster in the Ulster Cycle. It has remained popular in Ireland and spread widely throughout the English-speaking world during the twentieth century. Conor is the more traditional Irish spelling, while Conchobhar and Cornelius have historically served as Latin equivalents.
