Edvard

Edvard is the Scandinavian, Finnish, Slovene, Czech, and Armenian form of Edward, derived from the Old English elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and weard, meaning guard or protector. The name was introduced to much of northern and central Europe through the influence of the English royal tradition surrounding the many Anglo-Saxon and medieval kings named Edward. Among its most celebrated bearers are the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, both of whom brought lasting international recognition to the name.
