Flip

Flip is a Dutch short form of Filips, the Dutch cognate of Philip, which derives from the ancient Greek name Philippos, composed of the elements philos (loving, fond) and hippos (horse), meaning roughly lover of horses. The name entered Dutch as a familiar diminutive and has also been used independently as a given name in the Netherlands and Flanders. It corresponds to similar pet forms found across Europe, such as Phil in English and Pippo in Italian.
