masculine · Medieval Breton (Latinized) origin
Iudocus is a Latinized form of the medieval Breton name Iudoc, itself derived from an Old Breton element meaning lord or chief, related to the Celtic root underlying similar titles of rank and authority. The name was borne by a seventh-century Breton saint, traditionally identified as a prince who renounced his throne to become a pilgrim and hermit, whose cult spread widely across Britain and continental Europe during the Middle Ages. His veneration gave rise to the place name St Austell's neighboring settlement St Just, as well as shrines in Winchester and elsewhere. Vernacular forms include Joyce and Josse, the latter common in French-speaking regions.
