Izabel

Izabel is a Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese form of Isabel, itself the Iberian medieval adaptation of Elizabeth, which traces back through Latin and Greek to the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning something like my God is an oath or my God is abundance. The name spread widely through medieval Europe carried by queens and saints, most notably Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, whose cult gave the name lasting prestige across Catholic cultures. Izabel gained particular visibility in Brazil through Princess Isabel, daughter of Emperor Pedro II, who signed the law abolishing slavery in 1888.
