Maarten

Maarten is the Dutch form of Martin, derived from the Latin name Martinus, itself based on Martis, the genitive form of Mars, the Roman god of war. The name gained widespread use across Europe largely through the influence of Saint Martin of Tours, a fourth-century soldier-turned-bishop venerated for his charity. The Dutch form Maarten is particularly associated with the Protestant reformer Maarten Luther, the Dutch rendering of Martin Luther.
