Martinus

Martinus is the original Latin form of the name that gave rise to Martin across many European languages, derived from Martinus, itself built on Mars, the Roman god of war, making the underlying meaning something like "of Mars" or "warlike." The name gained widespread use throughout the medieval Christian world largely through the influence of Saint Martin of Tours, the fourth-century bishop venerated for his charity and missionary work in Gaul. Martinus remains in active use in Dutch and other continental European traditions, and it stands as the direct ancestor of forms including Martin, Martín, Märten, and Maarten.
