Madelon

Madelon is a French and Dutch diminutive of Madeleine, itself derived from the place name Magdala, a town on the Sea of Galilee whose name likely comes from the Hebrew migdal, meaning tower. The name became widely used in the Christian tradition through the figure of Mary Magdalene, one of the most prominent followers of Jesus in the New Testament. Madelon gained further cultural recognition through a popular French song of the First World War, La Madelon, in which the name evokes a cheerful, idealized innkeeper.
