Malia

Malia is the Hawaiian form of Mary, itself derived from the Hebrew name Miryam, whose original meaning is debated but may relate to "sea of bitterness," "rebellious," or "wished-for child." The name has long been in use across Polynesian cultures and carries the warmth and adaptability characteristic of Hawaiian phonology, which favors open vowels. It gained broader international recognition in the English-speaking world partly through its association with Malia Obama, daughter of U.S. President Barack Obama. Maria and Marie are among its many cognates across other languages.
