feminine · Finnish origin
Marja is a Finnish, Sorbian, and Dutch feminine form of Maria, itself derived from the Hebrew Miryam, whose exact meaning is debated but often interpreted as beloved, sea of bitterness, or drop of the sea. In Finnish the word marja also independently means berry, giving the name an additional native resonance in that language. The closely related Sami form Márjá carries the same ultimate Hebrew origin. Related forms include Maria, Marie, Mary, and Maija.
