Ninon is a French diminutive of Anne, which itself descends from the Hebrew name Channah, meaning grace or favor. The form arose through the affectionate diminutive chain Nina and then Ninon, common in French pet-name formation. It is closely associated with the celebrated seventeenth-century French courtesan and wit Ninon de l'Enclos, whose salon attracted leading literary and philosophical figures of the age.
