Ruth is a Hebrew name, most likely derived from the root re'ut, meaning companion, friend, or vision of beauty. It is borne by the central figure of the Book of Ruth in the Hebrew Bible, a Moabite woman whose loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi made her story one of the most celebrated in scripture, and whose descendants include King David. The name passed into wide Christian use through the Bible and became especially popular in English-speaking countries from the Reformation onward. Related forms include the Scandinavian Rut and the Spanish and Italian Rut or Rute.
