Anastasiya is the East Slavic form of the Greek name Anastasia, derived from the Greek word anastasis, meaning resurrection. The name was widely adopted by early Christians in honor of the concept of rising from the dead, and Saint Anastasia, a fourth-century martyr venerated in both Eastern and Western Christianity, helped spread its popularity throughout the Byzantine world and into Slavic cultures. It became especially common in Russia, Ukraine, and Bulgaria, where it was borne by several figures of royalty and nobility, including members of the Romanov dynasty. Related forms include Anastasia, Nastasya, Stasya, and the masculine cognate Anastas.
