Catrina is a variant of the Greek name Aikaterine, whose exact root is debated but may derive from the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. It belongs to the same family as Katherine, Catherine, and Katrina, all of which spread widely across Europe through the influence of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the early Christian martyr venerated throughout the medieval world. The form Catrina is particularly associated with Spanish and Italian linguistic traditions, and in Mexican culture it gained vivid imagery through La Calavera Catrina, the elegant skull figure created by artist José Guadalupe Posada and later popularized by Diego Rivera.
