Conchobhar

Conchobhar is an Old Irish masculine name composed of the elements con, a combining form of cú meaning dog or wolf, and cobhar meaning desiring or loving, giving an overall sense of lover of hounds or wolf-lover. The name is most famous as that of Conchobar mac Nessa, the legendary king of Ulster in the Irish mythological cycle known as the Ulster Cycle, where he rules over the heroes of the Red Branch, including the great warrior Cú Chulainn. The name was extremely common in medieval Ireland and gave rise to the anglicized forms Connor and Conor, which remain popular today. Cornelius was sometimes used as a Latin equivalent by clerics, and the Scottish Gaelic form Conchobhar also produced the anglicized name Connell.
