Drina is an English diminutive form of Alexandrina, itself a feminine elaboration of Alexander, which derives from the ancient Greek name Alexandros, composed of the elements alexein, meaning to defend, and aner, meaning man. The name gained some currency in Britain during the nineteenth century, notably as a childhood nickname of Queen Victoria, whose given name at birth was Alexandrina.
