Emilia

Emilia is the Latinate feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius, itself derived from the Latin root aemulus, meaning rival or striving to equal. The name was borne by several figures in ancient Rome and gained wide literary recognition through Shakespeare's character Emilia in Othello. It has spread across much of Europe and remains popular in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Scandinavian, and Slavic traditions. Closely related forms include Emily, Émilie, and Amelia, while Emil and Emilio are the masculine counterparts.
