Grit

Grit is a Low German and Sorbian short form of Margareta, the German form of Margaret, which derives from Latin Margarita and ultimately from Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name has long been used as an everyday diminutive in northern Germany and among Sorbian-speaking communities in eastern Germany and Poland. It is closely related to the more widely known forms Grete, Griet, and Margit.
