Margaretta is a Latinate elaboration of Margaret, itself derived through Latin Margarita from Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name spread across medieval Europe following the cult of Saint Margaret of Antioch and the popularity of Saint Margaret of Scotland, becoming one of the most widespread feminine names in the Western world. Margaretta represents one of several extended or ornamental forms of the root, alongside Margarethe, Margherita, and Marguerite.
