Margaretta is an elaborated Latinate form of Margaret, which derives from the Greek name Margarites, itself borrowed from a Persian word meaning pearl. The name spread widely through medieval Europe largely through the influence of Saint Margaret of Antioch and later Saint Margaret of Scotland.
