Margarette is an English feminine name and an elaborated spelling variant of Margaret, which traces back through Latin Margarita and Greek margaritēs to a root meaning pearl. The Greek word was itself borrowed from an ancient Iranian or Sanskrit source referring to the same precious gem. The name gained enormous popularity throughout medieval Europe largely through the cult of Saint Margaret of Antioch, a widely venerated Christian martyr.
