Mamie

Mamie is an English pet form of Mary or Margaret, both of which have deep roots in ancient languages — Mary deriving from the Hebrew Miryam, of uncertain but possibly Egyptian or Hebrew origin meaning beloved or bitter, and Margaret coming from the Greek Margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name gained widespread use in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century as an affectionate diminutive in everyday speech. It is closely associated with Mamie Eisenhower, wife of United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who helped popularize the name in mid-twentieth-century America.
