Petrus

Petrus is the Latin form of the Greek name Petros, itself a translation of the Aramaic name Kepha, all carrying the meaning rock or stone. The name was bestowed by Jesus upon the apostle Simon in the New Testament, making it one of the most widely adopted names in Christian history. Its influence spread across medieval Europe through the veneration of Saint Peter, the first pope, generating an enormous family of cognates including Peter, Pierre, Pedro, Piero, Pēteris, and Pieter. In modern usage Petrus remains most common in Dutch and in formal Latin ecclesiastical contexts.
