Risto is a Finnish, Estonian, and South Slavic short form of Kristoffer or Kristian, names ultimately derived from the Greek Khristos, meaning anointed one, itself a translation of the Hebrew Mashiach. In the Scandinavian and Baltic traditions it developed as an independent given name, while in Macedonian and Serbian use it functions as a familiar form of Hristo or Hristofor. The name shares its Greek root with Christopher, Christian, and the Slavic Hristo and Kristo.
