feminine · Russian origin
Sofiya is the Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian form of the Greek name Sophia, derived from the ancient Greek word sophia, meaning wisdom. The name gained wide use across the Christian world partly through Saint Sophia, a legendary martyr venerated in both Eastern and Western traditions, and through its association with the great cathedral Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It was borne by several European royals and remains common throughout Slavic-speaking countries today. Closely related forms include Sofia, Sophie, and Sophia.
