Sonya

Sonya is a Russian diminutive of Sofiya, itself derived from the Greek name Sophia, meaning wisdom. It entered broader English-speaking use largely through Russian literary and cultural influence, most notably as the name of sympathetic characters in Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. The name is closely related to the Scandinavian and English form Sonja, as well as the more formal variants Sofia and Sophia found across European traditions.
