Sonia

Sonia is a Latinate form of Sonya, itself a Russian diminutive of Sofiya, which derives from the Greek name Sophia meaning wisdom. The name spread widely across Europe through Russian literary influence, most notably via the character Sonya in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace and Sonia in Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. It became established as an independent given name in English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Polish-speaking communities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Closely related forms include Sonya, Sofiya, Sophia, and the Catalan variant Sònia.
