Stjepan

Stjepan is the Croatian and Serbian form of Stephen, ultimately derived from the ancient Greek name Stephanos, meaning crown or wreath. The name was borne by several medieval Croatian and Hungarian kings, most notably Stjepan I of Croatia and Stjepan Tvrtko I of Bosnia, giving it deep historical resonance in the region. It entered widespread use through the veneration of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Related forms include Stefan, Stepan, Štefan, and the anglicized Stephen.
