Bettina is a German and Italian diminutive of Elisabeth, itself derived from the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning my God is an oath or my God is abundance. The name gained widespread recognition through Bettina von Arnim, the nineteenth-century German Romantic writer and activist born Elisabeth Catharina Ludovica Magdalena Brentano.
