feminine · English origin
Delia derives from the ancient Greek epithet Dēlia, meaning woman of Delos, the small Aegean island regarded in Greek mythology as the birthplace of the twin deities Apollo and Artemis. As an epithet of Artemis, the name carried associations with the moon, hunting, and divine femininity. It was popularized in English and other European literary traditions partly through pastoral poetry of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including a sonnet sequence by the English poet Samuel Daniel. Délia is the Portuguese, French, and Hungarian form, while the name also functions occasionally as a short form of Cordelia or Adelia in English use.
