Elizabeth

Elizabeth derives from the Hebrew name Elisheba, composed of the elements el, meaning God, and sheva, meaning either oath or seven, giving the overall sense of my God is an oath or my God is abundance. In the Hebrew Bible, Elisheba is the wife of Aaron, and the name passed into Greek as Elisavet and into Latin as Elisabetha before spreading widely across Europe through Christianity. The name gained enduring prominence through figures such as Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist in the New Testament, and later through monarchs including Elizabeth I of England.
