Ginger

Ginger is an English given name derived from the common noun ginger, the spice obtained from the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale. The word itself traces back through Old French and Latin to Greek zingiberis, ultimately from a Dravidian or Sanskrit source. The name is often given to red-haired individuals, as ginger has long been associated with that hair color in British and American English. It is also used as a pet form of Virginia, famously borne by American dancer and actress Ginger Rogers, whose given name was Virginia.
