Virgie

Virgie is an English diminutive of Virginia, which itself derives from the Latin family name Virginius or Verginius, of uncertain but possibly Etruscan origin. Virginia gained widespread use in the English-speaking world partly through its association with the American colony named in honor of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen. Virgie emerged as an affectionate short form, particularly common in the American South during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
