Marion

Marion is a French diminutive of Marie, itself the French form of Maria, which derives from the Hebrew name Miryam, whose meaning is debated but may relate to roots meaning beloved, sea of bitterness, or rebellion. As a feminine name it was common in medieval France and England, carried in part by the legendary Maid Marian of Robin Hood folklore. It later came into use as a masculine name in English-speaking countries, most famously borne by American actor John Wayne, whose given name was Marion Michael Morrison.
