Peder

Peder is the Scandinavian form of Peter, ultimately derived from the Greek name Petros, meaning rock or stone, itself a translation of the Aramaic name Cephas given by Jesus to his apostle Simon. The name spread throughout medieval Europe through the veneration of Saint Peter, the first pope, and took distinct regional forms in the Nordic countries. Closely related forms include Per, Peer, Petter, and Pär, as well as the wider European cognates Pierre, Pietro, Pedro, and Pieter.
