Per is a Scandinavian and Breton form of Peter, itself derived from the Greek Petros, meaning rock or stone, which in turn was a translation of the Aramaic name Cephas given by Jesus to the apostle Simon. The name has been in common use throughout Sweden, Norway, and Denmark for centuries, carried by numerous historical figures including Swedish playwright Per Lagerkvist. Breton Per developed independently from Latin Petrus through a distinct transmission route into the Celtic-speaking communities of northwestern France.
