Zachary is the English form of the Latin Zacharias, itself from the Greek Zacharias, which derives from the Hebrew name Zekharyah, meaning remembered by God, from the elements zakhar (to remember) and Yah (a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh). The name appears prominently in the Bible, most notably as the father of John the Baptist and as one of the Hebrew prophets. It was borne by Pope Zachary in the eighth century and later by Zachary Taylor, the twelfth president of the United States. Related forms include Zachariah, Zechariah, Zackary, and the shortened forms Zach and Zack.
