Elsbeth

Elsbeth is a German contracted form of Elisabeth, which derives from the Hebrew name Elisheba, composed of the elements el, meaning God, and sheva, meaning oath or possibly seven. The name was borne widely across German-speaking lands as a vernacular variant of the internationally popular Elisabeth, itself spread throughout Europe largely through the veneration of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in the thirteenth century. Elspeth is a closely related Scottish form, while Elizabeth, Lisa, and Elisa represent cognates found across other European traditions.
