Bert is a short form of various Germanic compound names whose first or second element contains the element beraht, meaning bright or famous, such as Albert, Robert, Herbert, or Bertram. It emerged as an independent given name in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century, when pet forms of longer names frequently gained standalone use. The name gained wide cultural familiarity through fictional characters, most notably the chimney sweep Bert in the 1964 film Mary Poppins and the character Bert from the American children's television series Sesame Street.
