Cindy originated as a diminutive of Cynthia, itself derived from the Greek epithet Kynthia, meaning "woman from Kynthos," referring to Mount Kynthos on the island of Delos, the mythological birthplace of the goddess Artemis. It also developed independently as a short form of Lucinda and Belinda, though the Cynthia connection became dominant in modern usage.
